Letter “A” Polymer Clay Alphabet Cane Tutorial 

This free tutorial is part of a series on creating polymer clay alphabet canes and shows how to create all 26 capital letters of the English alphabet. (The whole series used to be on my other site, KayVincent.com, but I’m migrating all of my polymer clay-related resources here onto this PolymerKay.com website instead.)

You will need:

Small block of black polymer clay and larger piece of white polymer clay
Black and white clay

Instructions

Step 0) Condition the clay


1) Roll the black clay into a sheet approx 1.5mm thick (usually one of the middle settings of the pasta machine):

2) Cut off around a quarter of the white clay and save that piece for later:

3) Roll the white clay into a cylinder approx 2.5cm (1 inch) in diameter:

4) Using the white cylinder from Step 3 above, cut it into a wedge shape (making sure that both cuts start from the same point at the top of the circle):

5) Using the black sheet of clay from Step 1, cover the two flat sides of the wedge with a layer of black clay. Then trim off any excess black:

6) Make a horizontal cut across the middle of the wedge shape:

7) Insert one layer of black clay between the two pieces of the wedge. Trim off any excess black:

8) Reassemble the pieces of the cane:

9) Take the piece of white clay from Step 2 and roll it through the pasta machine on the thickest setting, then wrap it around the outside of the cane:

10) Reduce the cane.
